Best Space Pictures of 2010: Odd Aurora, Ring of Fire, MoreAn airplane is silhouetted against the first solar eclipse of the decade, seen over Bangkok, Thailand, in January. The annular eclipse blotted out 57 to 80 percent of the sun over Thailand, depending on the province, Sakshin Bunthawin of Songkla University told the Phuket Gazette.
This shot, chosen as one of our editors' picks for the year's best space pictures, was originally published in the gallery "Eclipse Photos: 'Ring of Fire' Shines Over Africa, Asia."

Hi friends! WONDERFUL NEWS TO SHARE WITH YOU: in Rome at the Bioparco has born a male of cercocebus monkey!The white-eyelid mangabeys are African Old World monkeys, belonging to the genus Cercocebus. They are characterized by their bare upper eyelids which are lighter than their facial skin colouring, and the uniformly coloured hairs of the fur. The other two genera of mangabeys, Lophocebus and Rungwecebus, were once thought to be very closely related to Cercocebus, so much so that all the species were placed in one genus. However, it is now understood that Lophocebus and Rungwecebus species are more closely related to the baboons in genus Papio, while the Cercocebus species are more closely related to the Mandrill.

An Earwig's Night Out

If you look closely there is some frost to be seen on the earwig so I'm assuming it wasn't too comfortable.
Natural light: 57 exposures (0.5s, f5.6, ISO400) + one exposure (3.2s, f16, ISO400). I used the stopped down exposure to get a more seamless transition from sharp to blurry. I did not use this extra exposure in the stereogram shown below and you can see the difference if you look at the out of focus parts of the grass leaf.

I Dermatteri (Dermaptera) sono un ordine di insetti che comprende circa 1.800 specie raggruppate in 3 sottordini (Forficuloidea, Arixenioidea, Diploglossata) e 10 famiglie. Comunemente sono note con il nome di "forbicine". Sono insetti eterometaboli. Caratteristici sono i cerci ben sviluppati al termine dell'addome, con funzione terrifica e per afferrare la femmina durante l'accoppiamento. L'apparato boccale è di tipo masticatore e il regime dietetico è onnivoro (si annoverano anche predatori all'interno dell'ordine). Provocano danno economico colpendo i frutteti.

Nevada Fall, John Muir Trail, Yosemite National Park
Returning yet again to Yosemite National Park, when I visited in June I had the pleasure to repeat the beautiful hike up and over Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall, pictured here. The well-traveled Mist Trail follows the Merced River upstream through the mists of Vernal Fall, then back behind Liberty Cap (the prominent peak in the center of the frame) and eventually circles back to the top of Nevada Fall, some 2000ft higher in elevation than when you started. Upon reaching the top of Nevada Fall one can turn back, or preferably continue onwards and connect with the tail end (or more often the beginning) of the 211 mile John Muir Trail (which I would love to hike if someone would kindly cover the cost!). The views from the John Muir Trail are probably my favorite from which to see Nevada Fall.
This week in Yosemite corresponded with the peak flow from the late spring melt, and the amount of water moving over the falls was extraordinary. You can see the view looking down the falls, previously posted, here. We were soaked from the lower portion of the hike, and even from some sporadic showers of water pouring down on this stretch of trail (not a good thing for camera equipment, but great for beating the heat). And though I wasn't sure how I felt about the cloudy skies at the time, they really added a beautiful quality to the light, particularly where it struck Liberty Cap and the back of Half Dome (easy to miss, but Half Dome is in the top left of the frame).
I have been very slow to get my large format photography online, but I have more to follow soon.
As I like to point out every chance I get, go to Yosemite! If you've never been, or just haven't been in some time, just go! It's such an extraordinary place, I cannot imagine regretting the decision to spend time there. Just go!

New Fences Just Aren't The Same
Another from Saurday mornings meet up with Anita - we both agreed that you should only be allowed to build fences with old reclaimed timber with plenty of character.
Still liked the view on a lovely misty morning.
Should add that I've gone for a mix of 4 or 5 shots in photomatix to try and make the most of the pre-dawn milky pinkness.

Last One Standing
We are in the middle of a drought here in southeastern Oklahoma and the low water levels in Eufaula lake are exposing lots of old tree stumps.
I thought this one showed some character and the cloud formations made for nice colorful sunset.

If this isn't one of the coolest places on earth I don't know what is!! I've bee to amazing sites sites on five continents, and Canyonlands National Park ranks right up there with anything I've ever seen.
Over and over again I found myself just stunned by the landscape. If you haven't been there........GO!!!

Anti-Fascism !
This is a photo of a well known graffiti. I found it on a wall near the university of Coimbra, Portugal. I took the picture in 2008. The design says it all in such a simple way! Anti-Fascism, Anti-Nazism, Anti-Racism... We must never forget the past.
