Festival della Fotografia Etica. World.Report Award 2014

Il World.Report Award - Premio Italiano di Fotogiornalismo è giunto alla sua IV edizione e ha visto anche quest'anno  accrescersi il  proprio successo, tanto che la giuria,  ha dovuto valutare oltre 600 lavori, realizzati da fotografi provenienti da 41 diverse nazioni.
Di questi circa 237 si sono candidati per il Master Award, 262 per lo Spot Light Award e 137 per la nuova categoria Short Story Award. La giuria era composta da Aldo Mendichi e Alberto Prina, coordinatori del Festival della Fotografia Etica, Alessia Glaviano, photo editor di Vogue Italia e Sandro Iovine, direttore di FPmag (Master e lo Spot Light Award), mentre per lo Short Story Award hanno giudicato i lavori il Gruppo Fotografico Progetto Immagine e Sandro Iovine.

Ma ecco i vincitori dell'edizione 2014:

Master Award

Majid Saeedi con il lavoro Life in War 

«La giuria riconosce all’autore la capacità di aver realizzato un affresco della società afgana nelle sue molteplici sfumature, raccontando la quotidianità di un paese che è riuscito a mantenere viva la propria cultura e un barlume di normalità nonostante un conflitto devastante.

I 10 anni di guerra sono raccontati con una profondità di visione e una capacità di empatia che riescono a presentare la complessa realtà afgana nella sua contraddittorietà, che oscilla da una profonda disperazione a un’altrettanto profonda bellezza. Il lavoro supera quindi lo sviluppo classico del racconto reportagistico e diventa la storia per immagini di un’intera civiltà».

Spot Light Award
Oriol Segon Torra con il lavoro Young Patriots

«Immergendoci in un’atmosfera rarefatta e irreale, l’autore racconta il sorgere di pulsioni nazionalistiche in uno stato membro dell’Unione Europea, l’Ungheria.

Il reportage, con un’estetica sospesa e un attento uso dei colori, trova un linguaggio nuovo per raccontare la pervasività di un movimento di questo tipo, che arriva a insinuarsi in strati diversi della popolazione fino a coinvolgere le nuove generazioni».

Short Story Award
Gwenn Dubourthoumieu con il lavoro Child-Witches of Kinshasa

«L’autore ha saputo condensare in cinque scatti la drammatica vicenda delle streghe bambine, che da diversi decenni imperversa per le strade di Kinshasa e del Congo e ha risvegliato l’attenzione degli osservatori umanitari internazionali. Le immagini restituiscono con efficacia non solo il senso di straniamento e assurdità legato alle pratiche di esorcismo, ma anche l’impotenza e il dolore che i bambini accusati si trovano a dover sopportare. Questo lavoro intenso e sconcertante è supportato da una forte coerenza formale e ci costringe a soffermarci sulle problematiche sociali che hanno portato al diffondersi di queste credenze nella maggior parte della popolazione civile».

World.Report Award - Italian Award of Photojournalism reached its IV edition and has grown further to the point that the jury had the opportunity to examine and evaluate more than 600 submissions realized by photographers coming from 41 different nations. Among these, 237 participated in the Master Award category, 262 in the Spot Light Award category and 137 in the brand new Short Story Award category. The jury constituted for this occasion was composed by Aldo Mendichi and Alberto Prina (coordinators of the Festival of Ethical Photography), Alessia Glaviano (photo editor of Vogue Italy) and Sandro Iovine (editor-in-chief of FPmag) for the Master and the Spot Light Award, while for the Short Story Award the jury was composed by Gruppo Fotografico Progetto Immagine and Sandro Iovine.

Master Award

Majid Saeedi for his work Life in War

«The jury recognises the author’s ability to realize a tableau of Afghan society in its multiple nuances, recounting everyday life of a country that was able to keep its culture alive together with a flicker of normality in the midst of a devastating conflict.

Ten years of war are told with a profound vision and the capacity for empathy managing to present the complete Afghan reality in its contradictory nature, a nature that oscillates between a profound desperation to a likewise extreme beauty. The work surpasses the classic development of a reportage story and instead is an account of an entire civilisation».

Spot Light Award
Oriol Segon Torra for his work Young Patriots

«Deepening into a rarified and surreal atmosphere, the author tells about the rise of nationalistic impulses in a country that is a member of the EU: Hungary. The reportage, characterized by suspended aesthetics and attentive use of colors, finds a new language to describe the pervading sense of a movement of this kind, a movement that attempts to instill itself in different layers of the population until the new generations are engaged».

Short Story Award
Gwenn Dubourthoumieu for his work Child-Witches of Kinshasa

«The author has been able to condense in five shots the dramatic sequence of events in the lives of child witches, that after decades still rages across the streets of Kinshasa and the Democratic Republic of Congo and has awaken the attention of international humanitarian observers.

The images effectively reflect not only the sense of estrangement and absurdity linked to the exorcism practices, but also the powerlessness and the pain of the accused children who find themselves bearing the weight. This intense and disconcerting work is supported by a great formal coherence and forces us to focus on the social problems that have caused the spread of these beliefs among the civilians».
